Instead of Misery

By: Lizzie Joy (loveland) Nunemaker

Oh but this world is filled with angry people!

I can sit around and knit a yarn for a while, making a nice Afghan wondering what kinds of anger they have against me –I have quite the closet full of Afghans

But then one day I put the yarn ball down and I think, wait a minute

There are little lavender Fleabane daisies that are edible bouquets to wild rabbits

And there are pockets bulging with found pebbles and seaglass

And there are kittens that like to play hide-and-seek-pounce

And there are pistachio nuts that are the same shade of green as matcha tea and Luna moths

And there are blow-dried heifers that win at State Fair

And there are extra tomatoes, cucumbers, and flower bulbs in cardboard boxes marked: FREE

And there are love notes slid inside the slits of school lockers

And there are jewel-toned hummingbirds that zip in and out of gardens like shooting comets

And there are babies that hold up pieces of corrugated paper and laugh hysterically

And there are befriended crows that leave thankyou notes in the form of shiny trinkets

And there are raspberry-soft caterpillars with trains of ball-point-pen-like feet

And there are kids that cajole and dance while holding up signs for car wash fundraisers

And there are underdogs that prove everyone wrong

And there are so many other worthy things to notice

instead of misery.
